GIBH-GMU Stem Cell Translational Medicine Centre Unveiled

On Dec 24, an unveiling ceremony was held to mark the official opening of Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health; Chinese Academy of Sciences-Guangzhou Medical University  Stem Cell Translational Medicine Centre at the Second Affiliated Hospital.
 
Ran Pixin, Chairman of GMU University Council, Wang Xinhua, President of GMU and Pei Duanqing, president of GIBH along with other leaders attended the ceremony. Chairman Ran Pixin presided over the ceremony. President Wang Xinhua signed an agreement with Pei Duanqing, president of GIBH.

According to the agreement between Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health, Chinese Academy of Sciences (GIBH) and Guangzhou Medical University (GMU), GMU is responsible for providing venue and clinical translation of stem cell research, while GIBH is liable for technical support, promoting translation from basic research to clinical application through making full use of R&D and clinical resources The venue of the Center is located in The Second Affiliated Hospital. The goal of the centre is to establish a translational centre focusing on stem cell translational medicine. The main research areas are as follows: a) Stem cell clinical application,   b) Immunocyte therapy for malignant tumor, c) Genetic diagnosis for various diseases.

Chairman Ran Pixin placed great expectation in the establishment and development of the Center.  He pointed out that the establishment of Stem Cell Translational Medicine Center would further facilitate cooperation between basic research and clinical application. It is beneficial to scientific research as well as the well-being of people. It is also of great significance to the development of both parties in the long run.

President Pei Duanqing reviewed the cooperative programmes with GMU. He acknowledged the promising prospect in stem cell research as it was an emerging research area. With the establishment of GIBH-GMU Stem Cell Translational Medicine Center, It would deliver resource sharing and mutual benefit to GMU and GIBH.

In recent years, GMU has promoted comprehensive development by integrating varied resources in order to strengthen our core competencies.

For instance: Kingmed College of Laboratory Medicine with Kingmed Diagnosis, Sino-Hoffmann Institute with Jules Hoffmann, Dermatology Department &Institute with Guangzhou Institute of Dermatology. The cooperation expands from domestic to international, and the partners range from non-directly affiliated hospitals to institutes and enterprises. The areas of cooperation include not only basic research but also translational studies.
The in-depth collaboration with research institutes, hospitals and enterprises has integrated resources for their mutual benefit. Since the renaming of the university, GMU has adopted a scientific research oriented strategy to promote “Quality discipline, Talent management, and Synergy of affiliated hospitals”, which are the driving force for a new leapfrog development.
