The 2017 Science and Technology Conference was held in the lecture hall of Guangzhou Medical University Panyu Campus on November 15th. Over 400 faculty members, including the University leadership, heads and directors of all departments, colleges, and affiliated hospitals were in attendance. The conference was formally presided over by Prof.Liu Jinbao, Vice President of Guangzhou Medical University.

On behalf of Guangzhou Medical University, President Wang Xinhua delivered a report highlighting the university’s scientific research and reviewing major achievements attained by GMU in science and technology over the past three years.：These achievements included： the stipulation of policies and regulations supporting high-level university development , research team building, achievement of breakthroughs in the development of disciplines and programs, strengthening of research platform development, significant improvement of capabilities in research innovation , a closer partnership between industries, GMU and research institutes, streamlining of scientific research management systems. The report also pointed out the difficulties and problems facing GMU in scientific research.
The report also put forward the blueprint for discipline construction and scientific research in the coming three years. We shall hold high Xi Jinping’s “Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era,” guiding our scientific research with the aim of building a high-level teaching and research oriented medical university, focused on the development of national central cities and in light of the demands of social and economic development of Guangzhou City. We shall fully implement the 13th Five Year Plan of GMU and construction plan for building a high-level university. Every effort will be made to achieve a higher level in both scientific research and discipline development.
The report proposed a new plan for scientific research in 2018. We shall attach great importance to faculty development in scientific research, enhancing the overall capacity of the faculty, constantly optimizing discipline structure, striving for new levels in discipline development. We shall make coordinated plans to build key laboratory clusters in line with high-level university development, and deepen reform in management, so as to rise to the challenges of undertaking national key scientific projects. We shall accelerate effective collaboration between production, education and research to promote commercialization of scientific and technological achievements. We shall strengthen interaction between research and education, increasing the involvement of scientific research by improving programs and talent training. We shall further develop policies and regulations for high-level university development, improving management and services for scientific research. Guided by the Party, we shall strive to demonstrate a new academic atmosphere.

Vice President Liu Jinbao gave specific suggestions for the development of the ESI discipline, coordinated development for disciplines and platforms, platform management, and the application for the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He also announced the list of distinguished institutions and individuals who were awarded in the fields of science and technology between 2015 and 2017.
