General Introduction to Scientific Research of GMU
Date: 2014-05-26

GMU consists of 13 research institutes, namely, Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Diseases, Sino-French Hoffmann Institute, Guangzhou Institute of Snake Venom, Institute of Neuroscience, Institute for Chemical Carcinogenesis, Cancer Research Institute, Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences, Guangzhou Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Guangzhou Institute of Cardiovascular Disease, Guangzhou Institute of Orthopedics, Urology Institute and Institute of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, Institute of Higher Education.

GMU is also home to Clinical Research Centre of Respiratory Diseases, Guangdong Research and Development Centre for Respiratory Medical Engineering Technology., Guangdong Ethics Research Centre and Guangdong Endoscope Surgical Research and Development Centre. Laboratory of Institute of Respiratory Diseases was built as a state key laboratory in 2007 and later passed the assessment in 2010. This rewrote the history that there was no state key laboratory among local universities in Guangdong Province before. Right now, GMU owns 1 state key laboratory, 1 key laboratory co-built by MOE and Guangdong Province, 6 key laboratories at provincial level, 16 key laboratories at municipal level and 1 municipal key research base of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Diseases (state key lab)

In 2007, the internal medicine (respiratory diseases) passed the assessment of national key disciplines organized by Ministry of Education and was re-elected as the national key discipline with the highest score among similar disciplines. In the same year, in the eighth round assessment of key disciplines in Guangdong Province, 7 category B disciplines of GMU were selected as key disciplines, which ranked top of similar universities. In 2010, respiratory internal medicine entered the national “key discipline of featured project”. Currently, GMU has 43 key disciplines of various types at different levels, including 1 national key discipline: internal medicine (respiratory diseases), 5 Guangdong provincial key disciplines: clinical medicine, general practice, pathology, pathophysiology, hygiene toxicology.

GMU is accreted to confer master’s degree in 5 Category A disciplines and 35 category B disciplines, doctoral degree in 1 Category A discipline. It also offers post-doctoral training in 1 Category A discipline (clinical medicine).Between 2006 and 2013, Guangzhou Medical University (GMU) has taken initiatives to encourage scientific research, which has led to remarkable outcomes and steady growth of overall scope of scientific research development. GMU has been granted funding for 1,000 scientific research projects above municipal level, including 322 Chinese National Natural Science Foundation projects.

GMU has received up to RMB 295, 000, 000 funding for scientific research from the government. Among 4,000 papers published, 141 were collected by SCI journals like Lancet and Nature. In 2008, one paper of GMU won highest votes to be one of the most outstanding papers of Lancet. Thirty-four scientific research outcomes won awards above municipal level, including 1 project at national level and 4 projects at provincial level. Besides, 32 patents have been authorized.
