In the same year, in the eighth round assessment of key disciplines in Guangdong Province, 7 category B disciplines of GMU were selected as key disciplines, which ranked top of similar universities. In 2010, respiratory internal medicine entered the national “key discipline of featured project”. Currently, GMU has 43 key disciplines of various types at different levels, including 1 national key discipline: internal medicine (respiratory diseases), 5 Guangdong provincial key disciplines: clinical medicine, general practice, pathology, pathophysiology, hygiene toxicology.
GMU is accreted to confer master’s degree in 5 Category A disciplines and 35 category B disciplines, doctoral degree in 1 Category A discipline. It also offers post-doctoral training in 1 Category A discipline (clinical medicine).Between 2006 and 2013, Guangzhou Medical University (GMU) has taken initiatives to encourage scientific research, which has led to remarkable outcomes and steady growth of overall scope of scientific research development. GMU has been granted funding for 1,000 scientific research projects above municipal level, including 322 Chinese National Natural Science Foundation projects.
GMU has received up to RMB 295, 000, 000 funding for scientific research from the government. Among 4,000 papers published, 141 were collected by SCI journals like Lancet and Nature. In 2008, one paper of GMU won highest votes to be one of the most outstanding papers of Lancet. Thirty-four scientific research outcomes won awards above municipal level, including 1 project at national level and 4 projects at provincial level. Besides, 32 patents have been authorized.
