About us
Founded in 1958, Guangzhou Medical University (GMU) has been recognized as a part of China’s Double First-Class initiative since 2022. Strategically located in Guangzhou—the vibrant capital of Guangdong Province and gateway to the Greater Bay Area—GMU benefits from exceptional connectivity to Hong Kong, Macao, and global networks. Our modern Panyu and historic Yuexiu campuses provide state-of-the-art facilities for transformative learning and groundbreaking discovery.
Education
GMU is a leading university dedicated to medical education. We offer quality programs at undergraduate,master and doctoral levels. GMU is home to over 15,000 fulltime students, including 5,000+ postgraduates and about 10,000 undergraduates. GMU hosts postdoctoral research stations in Clinical Medicine and Biology. We have 24 schools (teaching units) offering 21 undergraduate programs spanning five disciplinary categories: Medicine, Science, Management, Engineering, and Law.
Our International MBBS Program, established in 2010, brings together ambitious students from 23 countries across five continents. Research
At the heart of GMU's academic excellence is a deep commitment to attracting and cultivating exceptional talents. Among our 1,211 full-time members are 645 doctoral and 2,072 master's supervisors, a group that includes luminaries such as Professor Zhong Nanshan, honored with the Medal of the Republic.
GMU ranks 73rd nationally in the ESI comprehensive standings, with eleven disciplines achieving global top 1% recognition :Clinical Medicine; Pharmacology & Toxicology;Molecular Biology & Genetics; Biology & Biochemistry;Immunology; Neuroscience & Behavior; Microbiology;Psychiatry/Psychology; Materials Science; Chemistry;Social Sciences, General. Notably, Clinical Medicine is in the global top 0.1‰.
Our research infrastructure is supported by 32 institutes, 1 State Key Laboratory, 1 national "Belt and Road" Joint Laboratory, 1 National Clinical Research Center, and 38 provincial and ministerial key research platforms.
Since the launch of its high-level university development initiative in 2015, the university has secured 5,100+ government-funded research projects, consistently ranking among the top four independent medical universities in China in terms of the number of projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation. Furthermore, faculty members have published 22,000 + SCI-indexed papers, including 30 in the top-tier journals Nature, Science, and Cell.
Patient Care
GMU drives coordinated innovation in medicine, education, and research, with a strong network of affiliated hospitals.
Affiliated Hospitals: 15 in total (11 general hospitals and 4 specialty hospitals), including 2 hospitals among China’s Top 100 and 4 designated Guangdong HighLevel Hospitals. Togethter, they provide about 21,000 beds and deliver approximately 23 million patient visits annually.
Key Clinical Specialties: Respiratory Medicine has ranked first in China for 15 consecutive years; Allergy, Thoracic Surgery, and Pediatric Surgery rank fifth; Psychiatry and Pediatrics (Internal Medicine) rank seventh; and Rare Diseases ranks eighth nationwide.

Embracing a global vision, GMU actively collaborates with 40+ prestigious universities and research institutions across 14 countries and regions, including our signature partnership—the Sino-French Hoffmann Institute, co-founded with CNRS and the University of Strasbourg.
