Guangzhou Medical University was founded in 1958. It is a national "Double First-Class" construction university that takes medicine as its strength and feature and conducts multi-level talent cultivation for doctoral, master's and undergraduate students. It has 25 teaching institutions, 27 research institutions and 14 affiliated hospitals.

I. Our characteristics: A national "Double First-Class" construction university. In 2021, the clinical medicine of our university was selected as a national "Double First Class" construction discipline; Clinical medicine, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Biology and Biochemistry, Immunology, Neuroscience and Behavior, Microbiology, Psychiatry and Psychology, Materials science, and chemistry have entered the top 1% of the global ESI ranking. Among them, clinical medicine ranks among the top 1‰ of the global ESI ranking, and the overall ESI ranking of all disciplines ranks among the top 100 universities in China. It has 1 national key discipline, 7 provincial - level key disciplines, and 32 city (department - level) key disciplines.

It has a national medical center, a national clinical research center and a national key laboratory. The school has 19 national clinical key specialties and 80 provincial (department - level) key specialties. Among them, the Department of Respiratory Medicine ranks first in the country, the Department of Allergy ranks second in the country, the Department of thoracic surgery ranks fourth in the country, the Department of pediatric surgery ranks fourth in the country, the Department of pediatric internal medicine ranks sixth in the country, and the psychiatric specialty ranks seventh in the country. It has an excellent team led by Academician Zhong Nanshan. Academician Zhong Nanshan served as the president of Guangzhou Medical University from 1992 to 2002. In October 2007, the only national key laboratory in the field of respiratory disease in China approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology was established, and Academician Zhong served as the first director of the laboratory.

Guangzhou Medical University launched the Nanshan Class in 2010, and Academician Zhong will personally teach students. An excellent school in the undergraduate teaching evaluation of the Ministry of Education. The school adheres to the strategy of "prospering the school with talents".
