A UK healthcare delegation visited Guangzhou Medical University on July 10-11 to explore deeper cooperation in medical education, clinical training and research, the university said.

The delegation included representatives from NHS England, the University of Liverpool and Newcastle University, as well as officials from the British Consulate General in Guangzhou. They met with GMU President Zhao Xingcun, Vice-President Li Jianhua and heads of relevant schools and departments.

President Zhao welcomed the visitors and highlighted GMU's efforts to expand international collaboration as a national Double First-Class university. He said the university has maintained long-term ties with British partners, with progress in student exchanges and joint research, and expressed interest in broadening cooperation into new areas.

Mike McCourt, director of healthcare and deputy director of life sciences at the British Consulate-General in Guangzhou, noted the United Kingdom's strengths in healthcare technology and professional expertise. He expressed hope the visit would yield concrete partnerships.

Li Yingran, director of strategic partnerships at NHS England, briefed participants on the organization's development and outlined its strategy, including digital health transformation, community-based care and disease prevention.NHS England, a World Health Organization partner, continues to collaborate with China on healthcare workforce development, he noted.

Professor Peter Joseph McCormick, associate pro-vice-chancellor at the University of Liverpool, introduced the university's latest advances in life sciences research.

During the meeting, both sides discussed student and faculty exchanges, joint degree programs and collaborative research frameworks. Participants agreed that closer cooperation could strengthen training and research capacity while contributing to global public health.

The delegation also toured GMU's Medical Simulation Center and Science and Technology Exhibition Hall, and visited the university's First Affiliated Hospital and Affiliated Brain Hospital.
