CyberKnife Pioneer John R. Adler Jr. Joins Guangzhou Medical University

Guangzhou Medical University has appointed Prof. John R. Adler Jr., inventor of the CyberKnife radiosurgery system and a leading US expert in precision radiotherapy, as a visiting professor to strengthen international academic exchange and high-level talent development.

The appointment ceremony and an academic lecture were held on Dec 10 at the university’s Panyu campus. Vice-President Zhou Lin announced the appointment, while Vice-President Fu Xiaodong presented the certificate. The event was hosted by Vice-President Qin Dajiang of the Fifth Affiliated Hospital.

Following the ceremony, Prof. Adler delivered a lecture titled The Growing Importance of Precision in Therapeutic Radiation, sharing insights into recent advances, clinical value and future directions of high-precision radiotherapy. He also engaged with faculty and students during a question-and-answer session, encouraging young researchers to stay committed to their goals.

Nearly 300 participants attended the event, including representatives from government departments, healthcare authorities and enterprises, as well as university officials and faculty and student representatives.

Prof. Adler, MD, is the CEO of Zap Surgical Systems Inc. He is internationally renowned for inventing the CyberKnife radiosurgery system and helping pioneer the field of image-guided therapeutic radiation.

He has served on the faculty of Stanford University since 1987 and was appointed the Dorothy and TK Chan Professor of Neurosurgery and Radiation Oncology in 2007.
